Take an expensive product that’s selling well and make a “poor man’s” version for an unbeatable value price. That’s a strategy DRTV marketers have been using since the birth of the industry. Back in the day, it was long-form and live-shopping items that fed this business model. Today, the targets of opportunity are plentiful since pretty much every company is selling direct to consumer. Shark Tank-reject Ring, which Amazon bought for $1 billion in 2018, is the latest example.
